In April 2009 Jean Charles de Castelbajac presented his first series of paintings ‘The Triumph of Sign’ in the Paradise Row Gallery in London. Now Jean Charles brings us his newest series ‘The Tyranny of Beauty’ this time in the La B.A.N.K. Gallery. Keeping with the same obsession, for the past 40 years, Castelbajac has been using reworks and appropriations to create bridges between practice and symbolism to trigger questions and evoke a kind of emotional nostalgia. The tyranny in question is that of an insatiable need to please, of youth’s domination, of a quest for immortality and of the denial of time past. His aim is to demonstrate that everyone can do beauty and good, like in the Snow White syndrome in a series of Flanders tapestries. Personally I think this work looks quite nice, but it looks extremely like the formula he used in his latest series, and that makes it not very surprising or refreshing. I still prefer him as a fashion designer!

This Furry work is made by the female street-art collective NEOZOON, based in Paris and Berlin. And forces us to confront the ways in which we relate to animals. The group’s initial project was to take discarded fur coats and cut them into animal shapes, which it pasted to city surfaces. The artwork was often site-specific. In Berlin, for example, the coats were recycled to look like bears, because of the city’s official mascot and the two bears who live in a small enclosure for public viewing in the middle of the city. The fur coat animals force the realization that the pelts were once the skins of living animals, and thus provoke consideration of the public’s celebration and simultaneous exploitation of the captive creatures. In Paris, the collective created a flock of fur-coat lambs that innocently meandered its way across city walls toward Parc de la Villette, which was the site of some of the largest slaughterhouses in 19th-century Europe.
The latest project by NEOZOON is the non-toed fur-coatie: Pellicusia Urbana. Continuing the collective’s exploration of public attitudes toward captive animals, the non-toed fur-coaties are upcycled fur coats stuffed with moving machinery that creates an effect eerily similar to that of a living, breathing animal. Zoos in the German cities of Münster and Magdeberg have populated a few of their cages with the fur-coaties, complete with signs and descriptions. The fake creatures have also been spotted in public parks and playgrounds throughout Berlin.

Just saw the new alternate cover of the latest Vogue Homme Japan Issue. This cover was styled by Nicola Formichetti and shot by Terry Richardson. On the cover we see lady Gaga wearing nothing but some fabulously draped meat and very very red lipstick and nailpolish. The headline of the coverstory is ‘Lady Gaga, the naked truth!’. I don’t know how she does it, but the current queen of pop culture even looks totally cool in this raw look. I also don’t know why she is wearing meat, and what the statement exactly contains, but it makes me very curious.

This editorial ‘Going Places’ for T Magazine really got crazy with the nomadic trend. How much clothing can a girl carry? According to the stylist David van de Wal and the Photographer their concept contains ‘A woman who travels the world and wears her souvenirs on her sleeves’.I wish I had such a budget for ‘souvenirs’, everyone of this looks easily adds up over $10.000, now that is some very impressing stylingwork! Lots and lots of selling info and lots and lots products to organize!

I am very impressed by the images I just saw from street artist ‘Escif’. His street art, or better said, his paintings on the streets of Spain are absolutely lovely. The painting technique and the shape of his figures seem so sweet and harmless. But when you look better, they all seem to have a meaning , it’s like he tries to make the local citizens think about their position and history in place. You can see more of his work on his Flickr stream.

On Highsnobiette there is a lot of attention for Indian designer Kali Arulpragasm and her site Superfertile. She has a Indian/Tamil background and works in London. She designs jewelry inspired by social matters in west Asia. I really love it and really recommend to visit her site! On the Asian blog Masala Chai you can also find a very inspiring interview with Kali. Read it here.
