Cool Collector # Trend Files

Our natural consciousness has been expressing itself for quite some time by the frequent use of natural materials, with wood as a big favourite. Structures and colours serve as inspiration and get imitated in design perspectives from interior design to fashion.
The sources of inspiration from nature are now sought even closer to the humankind, and are more literally than ever before. Although many people show resistance to these natural materials, a lot designers are busy experimenting with human hair and skin. The natural contribute of human to the cosmos.

This can be done by using skin and hair, like Lore Langendries does with her chain of ‘springbok’ leather. And Kobi Perez is bringing us back to our primitive roots with his ‘Harry’ jewellery, by mimicking the use of hair in the first jewellery and accessories of this world.
Combining the form, structures and colours is the superlative degree of this. How this can be done is shown by Noortje Zijlstra. She made a stunning fashion collection by combining silhouettes, colours and the structures of beards, and pulls them out of their context by applying them on women.

The world of interior and design seems to be ahead when it comes to using natural materials and textures.  But the daring natural materials that make human and animal are more often seen in the fashion industry, where rebelling against ‘the normal’ always played a bigger role than in interior and design. Phoebe English for example, recently graduated from Central Saint Martins, created a whole collection with hair. For Maison Martin Margiela, hair isn’t a new material either.I would be excited to see the worlds of interior and fashion merging in the future, and exchanging these genres and principles. Think about it, a couch made from cat’s hair, or a dress with bark structures, how cool would that be? Some designers are already experimenting with this! Take a look at ‘Hair Cradle’, made by Culdesac & Studio Marisol. It’s made from human hair.

Lithuanian-born London-based knitwear designer Laura Theiss presented her resent SS11 collection. The designs combine traditional hand-knitting and crochet techniques inspired by Far East costumes with metallic embellishment, unusual color combinations  and futuristic, feminine vision in the forms. The inspiration behind collection was Chinese ancient legend about Dropa Discs and their owners “visitors from the sky” whom originates from 10.000 B.C.Really love the coloring and the crafting aspects of her concept!

Swiss designer Emilie Melden is one of the 7 womenswear designers who has been selected to be a contestant in the Hyeres 2011 Best Designer Competition. Some of the judges include Raf Simmons, Proenza Schouler, Lazaro Hernandez & Jack McCollough, and Christopher Kane.  Her designs are eccentric and look to be extremely well constructed. There is definitely a great sense of fantasy in her work, but you can see in some pieces that she also has the sensibility to tame that avant-garde beast and produce some beautiful sportswear.

With a vision embracing innovation and fantasy, the NYC-based young designer Setareh Mohtarez‘s work combines shape, movement, texture, and color. She nurtured her creative vision while attending the fashion department at the Antwerp Royal Academy.  After delivering her award-winning “Brightness Dawn” collection in 2009, she started her eponymous label, while keeping a strong respect for classic elegance. She is drawn to the mysterious and her work tells a distinct story that is close to her heart!

Really love the cosmic feeling her designs give you, a futuristic but natural style that triggers your fantasy! Check her work here!

She's only 18 years old but working her way up the fashionindustrie very fast! Rhiannon Jones has gained great attention surrounding her fashionlabel 'Bolshie'. Bolshie incorporates a totally honest and brutal observation on the fashion industry whilst encapsulating true British culture. Exploring themes of strenght, dominance, independence and everyday life, Bolshie contrasts a powerful structure against the stiff silhouettes of modern day amour contrasting with an ironic view on street style.

Especially the ironic element works out really well for her, she's using icons from Coca Cola and Barbie in a  very creative way which also appeals to artists like Lady Gaga. Personally I really like her work, also considering she didn't study fashion (yet) and is only 18 years old. We will probably hear a lot from this girl in the future!

# Editorial Files

Really had to laugh when I saw this editorial 'the Devil wears Anna'. Who has watched the documentary 'the September issue' , understands it right away. The editorial is a parody about American Vogue's director Anna Wintour and her head-stylist Grace Coddington.
It's published in Candy Magazine, I think it would even be more funnier if this idea appeared in American Vogue itself, guess Wintour won't agree with me. Watch the whole editorial here.

John Gallianio must have noticed he was one of the only big fashionbrands that hasn’t got a special cupcake or other sweet. Probably because his logo has not much DIY-potential. And if nobody else does it for you, you have to figure something out yourself. The British designer has teamed up with Parisian pâtisserie Ladurée to create an exclusive collection of macarons. John Galliano chose to use two flavors; rose and ginger to create a unique box and in honor of his latest release fragrance Parlez-Moi d’Amour. The macarons come in boxes of either six, twelve, or eighteen and are available exclusively from Ladurée stores in the UK, France, Switzerland, Monte Carlo, Italy, Ireland and Japan.

I know I’m way too late with this post but I’m using the I-was-on-holiday-excuse because I really want this image in my archive. This picture was made for a World Cup special in the Dutch edition of the magazine l’Officiel. They asked several designers from different European countries to make a world cup inspired outfit. The Dutch outfit was designed by who else than Viktor & Rolf and I really love it!! I already want this shirt for the European Cup, I’m sure it will look cool in 2012 too!

Gabriella Marina Gonzalez tegen.
