She's only 18 years old but working her way up the fashionindustrie very fast! Rhiannon Jones has gained great attention surrounding her fashionlabel 'Bolshie'. Bolshie incorporates a totally honest and brutal observation on the fashion industry whilst encapsulating true British culture. Exploring themes of strenght, dominance, independence and everyday life, Bolshie contrasts a powerful structure against the stiff silhouettes of modern day amour contrasting with an ironic view on street style.

Especially the ironic element works out really well for her, she's using icons from Coca Cola and Barbie in a  very creative way which also appeals to artists like Lady Gaga. Personally I really like her work, also considering she didn't study fashion (yet) and is only 18 years old. We will probably hear a lot from this girl in the future!

San Francisco based artist Jason Mecier has a very funny way of working. He makes 3d celbrity portraits of stuff they threw away themselves. He uses junk and discarded items donated by top stars, so yes…that Trojan condom box in the top left corner of Tina Fey‘s portrait actually came from Tina herself. Mecier has spent over 10 years creating outrageous portraits and is now so popular that stars contact him directly and pay $1,500 for a portrait, which he gladly makes from a bag of their junk that they provide.
Celebs who have asked for the portraits include Chris Rock, Pink, Tori Spelling and Chelsea Handler, whose portrait includes empty vodka bottles, a Snuggie box, Martini glasses, bottle opener, buttons, batteries, chapstick, dice, pens, badges and movie tickets. Jason still has a few celebs he’d like to do portraits of – including Justin Bieber, Lindsay Lohan, Judge Judy, Joan Rivers and Beyonce.

”The celebrity culture art theme has always been there. As kid I remember obsessively clipping and scrap-booking pictures from the TV Guide of my favorite shows.I enjoy trying to match the items with the essence of each unique subject. These days, much of my material is gifted to me from friends, family, fans and of course the celebrities themselves,” he said.

”When I became established as an artist celebrities began sending me their things. Most people send me anywhere from a shoebox to a trash bag full of things to incorporate into their portraits.”
At first I found it quit a original concept. But looking at the portraits I'm sort of confused about their 'random' trash, don't really believe this trash is based on the coincidence of what the celebrity's threw away that particular day. Like Tori Spelling, I'm really sorry but her trash is the trash of a six-year-old! If they send him dirty tampons, empty cans of cat food and and real trash, I would find it a lot more interesting! On the positive site, celebrity's do like to recycle ;).

On the UK site Don't Panic you can find a amusing interview with contemporary artist Mauro Perucchettti. Mauro knows how to catch the zeitgeist and how to combine it with irony and beauty, absolutely love his work! Read the interview here.

Cool Collector # Interior Files

A while ago I surfed like hell around the Internet looking for some cool wallpaper for my new house. I really got tired of it, because the coolness I had in mind wasn't easy to find. Most prints are very safe and made for a big public.
This weekend this site came along, the site of Wallpaper Republic based in Australia (is it just me or is Australia becoming more cool lately), where they show incredible cool wallpapers! Graphic, colorful, modern and very refreshing! Modern graphic prints by very good designers of modern themes like games and futurism. But, as a lot of very cool products, there are no selling points in the Netherlands or anywhere else in Europe! So if there are any dutch retailers that are reading this.....Please Please Please, get this brand to Europe soon...one customer guaranteed!
Here something about Wallpaper Republics philosophy:

"The wallcoverings market has been dominated by the 'take what we give you' philosophy. They make it and that's what you get. Stuffy Englishmen telling us that "traditional florals" make for exciting new wallpapers. It's only modestly better than the Hills Hoist mentality, which in our on-demand era rubs us the wrong way.
We find mass production, well, a bit dull. In its place we embrace a passion for great design and its ability to inspire and, through its uniqueness, to celebrate individuality."

Cool Collector # Advertising Files

Above pictures from the Ray Ban Guerilla campaign 'Never Hide' in Paris. They printed out Ray Ban sunglasses and sticked them on posters and statues and more. Personally I really think this campaign fits by the brand, but I think it's a little bit sad for the people who made and payed for the advertisement and posters on which they stick the glasses!

Cool Collector # Accessoiry Files

I am a big fan of the work of Tom Binns, but I'm not the only one. Binns has clients like Beyonce to Cate Blanchett and Michelle Obama to Lady Gaga. These high standards cause high prices which I can't afford. But here is one of his latest works which isn't that hard to copy for the true DIY-hards! A visit to the toy store and tang it! In case you are rich and not willing to do it yourself, the necklace is also available at Moss.

A remarkably weird new accessoiry trend is comming from Japan (where else). This accessoiry called the Led smiles can easily be affixed to your teeth and glow different colors while you smile. The colors can be changed wirelessly through a computer interface. Of course they work best in the dark. Check out the video, titled “party in your mouth,” shows a curated group of Japanese schoolgirls wandering the street wearing the glowing lights.
The new fashion accessories created by Japanese designers Motoi Ishibashi and Daito Manabe, are now being used in a commercial advertising a winter sale at a Japanese clothing store, Laforet Harajuku.
Personally I really don't feel much for a Led Smile, I am afraid it will influence my communication skills.

Cool Collector # Editorial Files

Just love this editorial 'Fashionmonsters' by Illustrator Eli Neugeboren and photographer Dustin Cohen. It's a combination of illustration and photography which creates the feeling of game figures living in our cities.

''We set out to create a noir feel, knowing that the monsters would upend that with their absurd placement and bright colors. Shot on location around lower Manhattan at the beginning of Fall, the light was great and the team Dustin put together created wonderful images for me to work with.”  - Eli Neugeboren

The fashion is Edelweiss by Sarah, model is Mirielle from APM Models, hair & makeup by Angelique Velez, styling by Matthew Simonelli, ahoto assistant/stunt driver is Andrew Hanenberg, photo assistant is Winfield Foster, and producers, Kids With Candy, Casey Levine & Monique Perreault.

True followers of this blog know I have a big affection for colorful Pop art! So it's not really surprising I am super enthusiastic about the work above from Ben Frost. Australian artist Ben Frost is known for his kaleidoscopic Pop Art, mash-up paintings that take inspiration from areas as diverse as graffiti, collage, photorealism and sign-writing.  Subverting mainstream iconography from the worlds of advertising, entertainment and politics, he creates a visual framework that is bold, confrontational and often controversial. His works looks very cheery and happy at first but when you look a bit longer you will find all kind of hidden messages in his work. In case you would love to have a Ben Frost hanging on your wall, your lucky because his work isn't that expensive for around 400 dollars you can have one of these beautifull prints on canvas on your wall. Buy it here!

Cool Collector # Shopping Files

A great project directly coming out of the (very buzzed school) Hyper Island. This Interactive Window Concept was made for their Advanced Interface Design class. Using Aussie streetwear brand WESC, they created these interactive windows where online uses upload their video, create their background and choose in which city they want it to showcase. A great concept not too far from reality. Watch video below for better understanding.

For now, this is a concept, but this concept gives us a sneak preview in the future world of shopping with shopping-windows with models who can be programmed to do all kind of things, like walking next to the customer, dancing, playing sports or any activity that fits to the philosophie of the store. Only the possibility makes this project very I repeat very exciting!

 Brief of the project:
We created a concept around and Interactive Display Window: The Worldwide Conspiracy.
All WESC Concept Stores would have these interactive windows where WESC Activists are showcased and chosen by users online all over the world. The name of the user is displayed on the lower corner of the window. Not only they choose the activist online but also create a pattern background to personalize their creation that they can showcase in any of the cities they can choose online.

That reactions of the offline users are also recorded live and are shown on a live stream on the site so you can see, on a split screen the reaction and the consequence on the video.
The Brief was to connect the brand with Music/Art and we used the best connection and resource the brand has connected to the creative industry: The WeActivists. We also wanted the brand to be perceived as global and connect the Activists more to the people.

The window contains a screen that displays these videos generated online and that turn live when users triggers them offline by walking.

Engine is becoming more and more a product with social and cultural value. To call it a luxury product might be a little bit overreacting but in the future it probably will! Because of that I really love this concept 'Lady Cans' by  the Death Spray Custom Collective. The whole idea of normal product with a overall-print of luxury logo's is becoming a little bit boring! But on this cans it still has some effect! Watch also the other very tough concepts on death spray's site, the work above is by far the most feminine!
